Word Counts and Updates

I decided to give my update today. I took off from work again on Tuesday and have been non stop at it.
I was at 23097 and have added 24354.
This puts me at 47451. My new goal is 50K, so I am 95% of the way there. It has been fun and frustrating, but I need the break this weekend. I have finished 8 chapters, about 5900 words a chapter. When I clean it up next month it should be a little less.
I need the rest, so I think I will be able to do 5 or 6 more chapters.
My beta reader seems to be really enjoying this. He called me last night and asked for chapter 8 after about an hour had passed when I sent him chapter 7.

Y'all are killing it! I'm jealous. Got some time set aside this weekend to get back on the horse and I've finished my last major project at work before I "retire" in January, so hopefully I can catch up for the second half of November.
Thanks Homer, but I have not really been killing it the last few years. I am 58 now, and I was also going to wait til I retired at 62 to really get into it. I would write off and on, but I really slacked off this year.
When they created the first post in October, it really inspired me. Now I want to finish it all as quickly and efficiently as I can.

Me neither. Haven't done much for years. But I'm "retiring" at 48! Not really... just from the rat race. I might become a guitar teacher!

Talk about time travel, I am jumping back and forth between literary time periods so fast that I'm not sure where I am on any given page. I'm not worrying about it right now, though. This month is definitely in the nature of get 'er down on paper and plan on organizing, editing, and expanding after a decent holiday away from the damn computer. Can she go without writing for two weeks? Two days? I think I'll compromise and just write longhand during the rest period. My eyes are too old to spend so much time gazing into the light. (The experience is not nearly as spiritual as that sentence sounds.)

Contract will be for 100,000 words, which agent says will give me leeway from 90,000 to 110,000 words. Wonder how many scenes I write in November will have to be stricken from the story to keep the book length reasonable. Some of my secondary stories have increased in importance, always a potential yellow flag on the play.

Oh, lord. It's worse than I thought: I'm using football metaphors. I was afraid that would happen once I started writing about Texas.

Today's Wordcount: 2,064
Total: 14.599
Left to Goal: 10,001!

One more word would have been nice today! But very happy with that. The scene I've just written is far too long, for what it is, but at least it's written. As always, once it's done, I can move on and come back to it later. If I keep pushing forward, I'll reach the end. And if I come back and have to scrape and cut away every ounce of fat afterwards, then I reckon I'll have done a pretty good job.

I wrote 900 words today, so I'm up to 15577 of 25000 words now. Only 10000 left!

I jumped from third person to first person narration, and I much prefer this. At the same time, it was a great help to have the scene already described from an external perspective, so I might add that step into my writing: 1) put down the scene in bullet points, 2) relay according to one narrator. I do want to try more in omniscient third-person POV at some point, but I find it very difficult to write.

Bit by bit. That includes a detailed timeline that spouted all sorts of new ideas, realizations, and scenes, as well as keeping events, people, their ages, and corresponding history straight.

I'm tempted to take a day off since I'm 5,000 words ahead of schedule, but it is usually a bad idea for me to lose momentum. If I keep up this rate, I'll dash into the end zone, toss the ball over the goal posts to the fans, and do a victory clog before Thanksgiving. That done, I can put the manuscript away and sit on the bench for a while before going back into the second quarter. I might even be over football metaphors by then.

Sigh. I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

2891 words today... and the final chapter of my WIP is complete! Hoorray!

2945 words written today, and almost caught up.

I still have my schedule to worry about, but my Tuesday Evening commitment got canceled, and should have some extra End of Month opportunities.

Added a 460 word scene to the novel this afternoon, and a 1100 word short over the weekend. Almost half way to target word count.

I hit a kind of wall last week in the novel, where I just couldn't figure out how to progress with the next sections I had outlined. Essentially, the first few chapters I have drafted cover about a week. I now need to cover around 3 years in the same number of chapters, according to the outline. I am working through the next chapter slowly trying to get time to move without simply dropping a "6 months later" bomb, and trying to rework the outline in a way that will flow more smoothly. I expect I'm probably doing this all wrong.
