If you click on this thread you must post on it...

I don't know if people still say "I'll meet you by the Pillar" but I wouldn't be surprised if they did. You must research that when you get to Dublin.

One of our favourite things to do when travelling is to strike up conversations with the locals. So, if the opportunity presents itself, I will ask!

Under Clery's Clock. Same street. Clery's department store is closed but I think the clock is still there. Long time since I was on O'Connell Street. The spot under where the clock used to be is still there in any case.

For fun, google nicknames for the Spire, or Ana Liffey, or statue of Molly Malone. Oh, those rascally Dubliners.

Whiskey with in-laws last night. Shoulda gone to the posting when drunk thread for my first legitimate opportunity to post, but didn't think of it.

Congrats Catriona, great to see it all coming together.

Congratulations, Catriona! :)

I'm not a Dubliner, and never been to Ireland, but Molly Malone is internationally famous. (The song has even been translated to Russian and Dutch, which is no wonder, given that the music and lyrics are fairly simple).

Some people tried to argue that Molly was real, and connect her to a certain Mary Malone (who died in 1699). But there's no evidence of this, and there have been many fishwives by the name "Molly Malone" over the centuries, so the claim sounds doubtful.

Maybe it's best to think of her is representing them all? :)

One question I got wrong was the year that women got the vote. I thought it was 1919, but it was 1920.

Allan Sherman was at his best in his parody of "Molly Malone." As I best recollect it, it went something like this:
She wheels her wheelbarrow
Through street that are narrow
Her barrow is narrow, her hips are too wide
So wherever she wheels it
The neighborhood feels it
Her girdle keeps scraping the walls on each side

In Dublin's fair city
Where the girls are so pretty
Me Mary stands out 'cause she weighs eighteen stone (That's 256 pounds!)
I don't mind her fat... but,
It's not only that, but
She's cockeyed and muscle-bound, Molly Malone!

Of course, Allan Sherman was most famous for transmuting Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours" into "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter from Camp)." I am surprised that, when looking it up on Wikipedia, I find that that song has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". Who'd a thunk it?

I clicked so I have to type something lol. My sister and I both have shared similar dreams recently. Last week we both had an intense dream that ended in us waking up scared. This week we both dreamed of our older sister who moved far away and hasn't visited in a while. Dreaming the same dreams as other people is always so cool and also bewildering. Its also very rare, the only other time I remember it happening is when I was very young and having a sleepover and I dreamed of running through a tunnel chasing a giant white rabbit. My friend woke up crying, which woke me up as well, and in his half awake state he said "the rabbit is chasing me". I never talked to him about it, but it was a weird occurrence.
